Blue Martini J.P. Riemens (2004)
J. P. Riemens is an accomplished guitarist and singer who's been on the local scene for over 20 years, and while his name may not be familiar, you've probably heard what he's done behind the studio console. As co-owner of Grant Avenue Studio, he's worked with the likes of Gordon Lightfoot and Daniel Lanois, so it goes without saying that his latest solo effort benefits from great production. The 11-song set features softly delivered lyrics against a mellow musical backdrop, mixing blues and R&B with some nice hints of jazz that work well on a song like Romance. Blue Martini isn't an album to rev you up for a night on the town, but when you get home late with that special someone, it might be the perfect alternative to, say, the too-blatant choice of Barry White as "mood" music.
